Fitness Swim Program

The Whitecaps Swim Club is a competitive swim club but you don't have to compete to be part of the team! The daily goals for our swimmers are to have fun, improve fitness, develop stroke technique, encourage hard work and discipline, foster sportsmanship and create team camaraderie.

Requirements

Swimmers must meet a minimum standard of ability to participate wthout direct supervision. Swimmers must demonstrate the following abilities during a swim test:

  • Jump feet-first into deep water and submerge completely

  • Surface and swim 25 m (one length of the pool) comfortably on their stomach without stopping or resting

  • Tread water comfortably for 1 minute, maintaining both mouth and nose above the water at all times

Swimmers will also be assessed by a coach to determine ability to swim at a competitive level.

Commitment

Swimmers commit to an entire swim season, either short course (Sep - Mar) or long course (Sep - Jun). Attendance to all practices is encouraged. Swimmers are encouraged to set personal goals. Fitness level swimmers can also try one competitive swim meet if they choose.

Swim Practice

Dryland warm up on the pool deck allows swimmers to warm up their muscles and prepare for the pool workout. Swimmers are expected to be on deck for dryland warm up at 4:15 pm everyday. Attendance is taken and dryland warm up will be done as a team before entering the pool. Bring your towel on deck for dryland!

The pool workout starts promptly at 4:30 pm and ends at 6:00 pm Monday to Thursday, and 5:30 pm on Friday. Younger swimmers are welcome to , but not expected, to swim for the entire 1.5 hours. Training time will increase  gradually to match swimmers stamina at the discretion of the coach and discussed with parents. It is important for a parent or guardian to let the coach know if a swimmer has to leave early.

Attire

Swimmers are expected to wear a swimsuit and googles, with long hair tied back. Swim caps are optional, but recommended. Whitecaps club swim suits are required for swim meets. The club also has Whitecaps goggles, swim caps and swim suits for sale. Sizing kits will be available the week of free try outs.

Nutrition

Please ensure that your child has a water bottle on deck as they will be working very hard and hydration is very important. It is also ideal to give your child a light, healthy snack an hour before entering the pool to help keep their energy up, such as a banana, yogurt, apples or cheese.

Swim Meets

Swim meets are swimming competitions between several swim teams. Swim teams from all over come together and compete against each other by swimming in a variety of races involving all four competitive swim strokes (freestyle, backstroke, breaststroke and fly). They are generally held by the host swim team at their home pool. The Whitecaps attend a number of swim meets throughout the season.
